Today’s run was the longest run either of us had done in a long time, but we were determined to run the whole time, and we did! We did our run at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis, Maryland. It was almost perfect weather for running this morning. The temperature was 63 degrees and the humidity was around 55%. The cool morning weather felt amazing after running in the hot, humid, afternoon sun.
We started our run around 7:45 am, just a little later than we wanted to, but it is hard to get up that early on a Saturday morning sometimes. More so for Rob, than myself, since he is the one who works and gets up early all week. Once we are up and get outside, in the nice cool weather, we are fine and ready to get our long Saturday run in!
We finished our 10 mile run in 2:01:50, which is a 12:11 pace. This was a pretty good run for us, considering we ran our first mile in 13:30! We ran the first 5 miles in 1:03:50 and the second 5 miles in 58:00, so we definitely picked up our pace for the second half of our run. We both felt pretty good at the end of the run, a little tired, but good nonetheless.
I really enjoy the longer runs. I am not sure why, but I think it is because once I start running I just feel so good that I don’t want to stop. I don’t really think about the fact that I am running, I just do it. Rob, on the other hand, said he likes the shorter runs better because he can keep a better pace. Either way, I think our pace for 10 miles was pretty good for us, since our major goal for the marathon is just to finish it! :)
It is hard to think that we will be running our 10 mile route just a little over 2-1/2 times in a couple of months! On Monday we start our 4th week of training! I can’t believe we have already completed 3 whole weeks of our training. It seems like we just started. On Monday our miles increase again, so instead of running 3 miles on Monday, we will run 4 miles. Let the fun begin!

A Nice Easy Run
Today’s run was really good, despite the fact that the humidity was 100%, but at least the temperature had dropped a little bit. Temperature at run time was only 77 degrees, much better than the 90 degree weather we had been having.
We got out and got our run in as soon as Rob got home because there was still the threat of rain and thunderstorms. We wanted to beat the storms that were still possible throughout the rest of the night. We were successful and probably helped us to keep a better pace.
We finished our 3 mile run in 30:55, which is a 10:18 pace. Rob kept us at a pretty good pace the entire time. We slowed the pace down a little bit for the hills, and in between the first and second mile, but still ended up with a pretty good run. The run felt great. It is amazing how much better I feel after a good run! The humidity has been a little bit draining after the runner’s high wears off, but other than that I feel great!

H-O-T...Hot
H-O-T…HOT! That is the best way to describe today’s run. The humidity and warm temperatures are back. I was hoping the storm we had the other day was going to keep it a little cooler, but I was definitely wrong.
We started our run around 4:50 pm and it was HOT! The temperature was 95 degrees with about 55% humidity. Ugh! Training in this weather should make the 26.2 miles in October easier, since we are hoping it is a little cooler by then.
Despite the heat and humidity, we finished our 5 mile run faster today than we did last week. We finished our 5 mile run in 58:30, which is an 11:42 pace. That is 0.61 faster per mile than our current pace had been. We ran a new route today as well. Thanks to www.dailymile.com it is much easier to map out a new route, so we don’t get tired of running the same thing. Then run was really good. We both felt great and were able to run at a pace that we both were comfortable at. It is amazing to think how 5 miles used to seem so long. Today, however, it seemed kind of short.
It is hard to believe we have run 44 total miles so far during our training. We have 13 more miles to log this week, which will bring us to a grand total of 57 miles in our first three weeks of training.

New Trail
We decided to do our 3 mile run today at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis, since we were already going to be in that area, but also because of yesterday’s storm. I took a drive around our neighborhood yesterday morning and there were a lot of trees, branches, and other debris along our normal run route, so I didn’t think it would be a very safe place to run today.
We did the other running around we needed to do first, and then we headed over to Quiet Waters Park for our run. We started our run around 5:00 pm and the weather couldn’t have been much better! After the heat and humidity that we had this past week and weekend, 80 degree weather with 48% humidity felt great! So great that we didn’t want to stop running after only 3 miles.
Our 3 mile run today was much faster than our 12 minute a mile pace, but the weather just felt great. Since we were running a new trail, we weren’t exactly sure where it started and where all the mile markers were, or if it even had any, so we decided we would run for 35 total minutes. We knew that if we ran for 35 minutes we would definitely run at least 3 miles, so that’s what we did. We figured out after our run that we probably actually ran 3-1/4 miles, instead of only 3 miles, based on where we started and ended, and the mile markers that they had along the way.
We finished our 3-1/4 mile run in 35:00, which is a 10:46 minute mile. That is a whole minute fast per mile than our current pace had been. The run felt so good and it was nice to be able to keep a little bit of a faster pace, since we were only running 3 miles. Hope this weather stays for awhile, since it makes running so much easier!

Humidity Is Not Our Friend
We got up early this morning to get our 8 mile run in, since today’s heat index was going to be between 105 and 110 degrees. We started our run around 7 am, and the temperature was already 72 degrees with 100% humidity! The humidity had dropped to 76% by the time we got done, but the temperature had risen to 88 degrees. Thankfully there was some shade and a little bit of a breeze every now and then to help “cool” us down a little bit throughout the run. It was horrible when the sun was beating on us!
Our 8 mile run today was a little slower than our 12 minute a mile pace we were trying to keep, but with the humidity at 100% for a good portion of the run, running at a little bit slower of a pace was probably a good thing. Despite the temperature and humidity, we still ran the entire 8 miles!
We finished our 8 mile run in 101:00, a 12:38 minute mile, which is just over our goal of a 12 minute a mile pace. It was just way too hot and humid to push it too much! We are so glad we got our run down before the heat index got too high. We are feeling a little drained after the run today, probably because of the heat, but drinking lots of water and staying hydrated! Despite feeling a little bit tired, it felt great to get our run in by 9:00 this morning.

We have officially registered for marathon. We received email confirmation last night.
"Dear Brooke, Congratulations! You are now registered for 2010 Baltimore Running Festival."
"Dear Robert, Congratulations! You are now registered for 2010 Baltimore Running Festival."
We are both really excited, but hope the weather is a little cooler by October!

It’s Not a Sprint, It’s a Marathon
It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon was the phrase I kept hearing during our 5 mile run today! While I know this, I am still having a hard time slowing myself down, so it is definitely a good thing that Rob and I are running this together. As the runs get longer and longer and longer, I have to remember this, so I don’t burn myself out. I have to remember that I am going to be running for 26.2 miles! I guess that part hasn’t really sunk in yet, but I am sure it will start to once we start running double digit miles. Those double digit miles start one week from this Saturday!
Our run today was another HOT one! While it wasn’t as hot as yesterday, it was still a hot run with that sun beating down on you for most of the run. We went out for our run tonight around 5:15 pm. The temperature for our run today was about 88 degrees with 51% humidity.
Our 5 mile run today was pretty good. Rob is really helping me with keeping a pace, instead of running for a time, which is something that is going to help me when we get to the longer runs, and marathon day!
We finished our 5 mile run in 60:11, which is a 12:02 minute mile. That is a nice pace for 5 miles and the pace we would like to run the marathon in. If we run a 12 minute mile pace for 26.2 miles, we would finish the marathon in a little over 5 hours! Wow, 5 plus hours of straight running! That is something I never would have considered doing before, and, yet, I am excited to do it!
In our first 7 days of training, including today, we have run a total of 28 miles! It is hard to think that we will be running 1.8 miles less than that all in one day! Only 2 months, 3 weeks, and 2 days until the marathon!

Our First Run Together
Today was our first day running together! It was so nice to have someone to run with me. I am so glad we are doing this together because it is something we both want and enjoy doing.
The weather here in Maryland was HOT today, and this heat is supposed to continue through the weekend with a high near 100 on Saturday! This weather has definitely been crazy this summer. Hopefully the temperature will start to drop once we hit August, but not counting on it. Since it was so HOT, and they were calling for thunderstorms, we decided to switch the mileage for our runs. Today we ran 3 miles, instead of 5 miles, so we could make sure we at least get our run in, so tomorrow we will run 5 miles. It is still going to be hot, but better than getting caught in a thunderstorm!
Now that we are running together, our runs will be in the early evenings when Rob gets home from work, except on Saturdays. Saturdays will be early morning runs because those are our long run days, and we need to get them done before it gets too hot outside.
We went out for our run tonight around 6:45 pm. We tried to wait for the temperature to drop some before we went out, but also wanted to get our run in before it rained. The temperature for our run today was around 90 degrees. I am sure the humidity was pretty high again, since they were calling for thunderstorms. All I know is, is it was HOT out there!
Our 3 mile run today was pretty good. I am getting used to running and really enjoy it, something I NEVER thought I would say. Now, I have to get used to slowing my pace down a little bit, and running with someone else. Today we ran the 3 miles a little slower than I had been, but it was still a good run. We were probably a little slower because it was so hot outside. We were also a little slower because Rob is just getting over being sick, but was still determined to get out and do the run.
We finished our 3 mile run in 32:55, which is still a 10:58 minute mile. Not bad! Before we started Insanity and training for our first marathon I was running a 12 to 13 minute mile, so staying between a 10 and 11 minute mile is a huge accomplishment for me. I am so proud of where I have come! I can’t wait to prove to myself that I can do this!

Another New Time
WOW! That is about all I have to say about today’s run. I continue to run better every day that I run. Today’s 3 mile run was good, and felt great, considering my legs still felt a little tired and sore from Saturday’s 7 mile run.
The weather was not as good today as it was on Saturday, but I also got a later start than I wanted to. I got up and started my run around 9:15 this morning. The temperature for my run today was about 72 degrees. The humidity was high again, around 87%, since they are calling for thunderstorms and rain sometime today.
When I started my run the sun was out, but about half way through my run, it started to cloud up and looked like it was going to storm. I knew that I had another mile and a half to run still and didn’t want to get caught in a thunderstorm, so I picked up my pace a little bit. I didn’t care about the rain, but the thunder and lightning is not something I want to be out running in.
I guess I picked up my pace, even though I still finished my first mile in under 11 minutes, more than I thought I did because I finished my 3 mile run in 30:10, which is a 10:03 minute mile. That is 28 seconds faster than my fastest time running 3 miles. I guess the threat of a thunderstorm will make a person run just a little bit faster. Even though I ran the fastest 3 miles of life, I felt great and am really enjoying training for this marathon.

7 Miles
Today's 7 mile run was amazing! I was actually very nervous about it, and, of course, that hill! (Look at the pictures below and you will know which hill I am talking about.) I started out at a slower pace than I had the previous 3 runs, but I knew I needed to because I was running a lot farther today than I had the other days. The first 3-1/2 miles wasn't too bad, not as many hills on the way down. All the hills are on the way back home! :) That was the part of the run I was dreading the most. But, I was so happy with my run today!
The weather was awesome! I got up and started my run at just a little after 6:30 this morning. The temperature and the humidity were awesome! The temperature when I left was 57 degrees and was only in the upper 60's when I got back. The humidity was definitely more tolerable this morning, compared to the last couple of runs. I would say the humidity was at about 50% or less.
I finished my 7 mile run in 78:28, which is an average of an 11:13 minute mile for 7 miles! The first 3-1/2 miles took me 40 minutes, and the last 3-1/2 miles took me 38 minutes! I conquered that hill! :) I actually ran faster on the way back, with the majority of the hills on the way back! I am so proud of myself and my run this morning. I think I might actually be able to run the 26.2 miles by October!

Another 3 Miles
Today's 3 mile run was another humid run. I tried to slow myself down, but did not do so well with that. I ran the same route as before, so I know my times and where I am at at certain points, so I tried to run a slower pace.
The temperature was in the 70's when I left and in the 80's when I got back, but the humidity was horrible. It was 100% humidity when I left...ugh!
I ran this 3 miles in 30:42 which was only .04 slower than I ran it on Monday, so I didn't do so well with slowing myself down, but I tried. I averaged a 10:14 minute mile! The run felt pretty good, despite the humidity.

My Running Route
Here are some pictures of my running route, while I am visiting my parents in NY. It is actually a pretty good route with some hills and straight stretches. The pictures below show the first 1-1/2 miles of my running route.
This is the beginning of my route. A nice flat stretch to warm-up!
This is the beginning of my route. A nice flat stretch to warm-up!
Then down a slight hill and up the first hill. This hill is bearable!
A little bit of a reprive before the next little hill.
After the little hill there is a nice down hill and another flat stretch.
Of course that is only one way! Then I have to turn around and run it back the other way, which is, of course, the hard part!
The hill in the picture above is the hill that got the best of me this morning! By the time I got back to the hill I had already run 2-1/2 miles. Definitely the steepest and hardest hill I have ever run!

4 Mile Run
Today's 4 mile run was good, but not great. I was hoping for a better run time, but at least I finished the whole 4 miles. I say that because the weather was not as good as it was for Monday's run.
The weather was just all right for running this morning. The temperature was about 70 degrees, but it was the 100% humidity at run time that made the run a little bit rougher than on Monday. At least there was a slight breeze and lots of cloud cover to help make the run a little cooler.
Today's run was 4 miles on a route that had a few hills and some straight stretches. I finished my 4 mile run in 47:11, which is an 11:48 minute mile. Definitely slower than I wanted to be, but the humidity was horrible! Plus, I knew that I needed to slow myself down a little bit because I was running one more mile today than I did on Monday. The hills, well mainly one of the hills, really slowed me down. This is definitely the steepest and biggest hill I have ever run, but I made it up the hill and just kept running. While I do not really enjoy running up hills, I know I need to include them in my training to help make me a better runner, and to get me better prepared for the 26.2 miles that await me in October!
Overall, today's run was good and a good test for me as well. Since I ran the whole 4 miles I would say that I passed the test! :)
Today's run summary:
Miles---4
Time---47:11
Cool Down---9:89
Total Time---57:00
Total Calories---877
Total Miles Run---7

First Day of Training
My first day of marathon training is in the books! I say "my" because right now Robert and I are training in two different states. I am home visiting my family for the week, so we are starting our training on our own. I figured it was better to start the training on our own, since the miles we are running are less than it will be in just a few short weeks!
So today's run was actually really good! I am a little surprised about that because I didn't workout Saturday (traveled 7 hours) or Sunday (rest day), so I was expecting today's run to be a little bit rough.
The weather was perfect here in NY for running this morning. The temperature was about 70 degrees, the humidity was low, and there was a slight breeze. It felt really nice outside compared to the weather we had last week!
Today's run was 3 miles on a route that had a couple of hills and some straight stretches. I finished my 3 mile run in 30:38! That is a 10:13 minute mile! The fastest I have ever run 3 miles! I know I was only able to run at that pace because of Insanity! For those of you who don't already know, Robert and I completed two 60 day rounds of a program called Insanity on July 10, 2010. This program has changed our lives! To see our transformations go to: http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/pages/Independent-Beachbody-Coach-Brooke-Olejniczak/119526381402331?ref=ts
I actually enjoy running now, and find it to be easier for me after completing two rounds of the Insanity program. I just have to remember to slow myself down a little bit for the longer runs. ;)
Today's run summary:
Miles---3
Time---30:38
Cool Down---9:62
Total Time---40:00
Total Calories---568
Next run: Wednesday, July 14th--4 miles!

Marathon Training
Our marathon training starts July 12th, 2010! We are so excited! 10 days and counting!
I will try to post every day we run, since we won't run every day, after our run. This way you will be able to follow us on our journey, see how we are doing, and how we are feeling.
I hope you will follow us as we train for our first marathon!

Our First Marathon
Here is the website for the Baltimore Running Festival.
I still can't believe that I am going to be running my first marathon in 3 months! This is something I have always wanted to do and I am so glad that I am finally going to do it. And best of all...I am doing this along side my husband. This is his first marathon as well, but we can do this!
We ARE going to do this!
